The AI expectations gap
AI BriefingIn August 2026, Anthropic surveyed a representative sample of U.S. adults (N=10,980) and its own employees, finding similar assessments of AI's current capabilities but sharply different expectations about the pace of progress. 91% of employees expected AI to make Nobel-level discoveries before 2030, compared with just 39% of the public; on average, employees expected AI to be able to perform 75% of their current work, compared with just 28% for U.S. workers.
