404 Media tests how ChatGPT ads are targeted using prompts, phone numbers, and email addresses

Through its own testing, 404 Media found that OpenAI allows advertisers to serve ads to ChatGPT users and target specific groups based on email addresses, phone numbers, or unique identifiers on their phones. ChatGPT's ad targeting also uses prompts entered by users, who may assume those prompts are private, even though they may be reviewed by humans or used for ad targeting. ChatGPT has about 1 billion monthly active users, most of whom may not know they are being precisely targeted using personal data that advertisers upload to OpenAI.
