There is a cup in front of you,
when you drink water from it, it is a water cup
when you smoke, it is an ashtray
when you arrange flowers in it, it is a vase
The cup itself is actually nothing in particular; this is calledemptiness
Whatever you use it for is what it is; this is calledwondrous function
If you insist that it must be a cup, this is calledattachment to appearances
When you go so far as to argue and bicker with others over it, this is calledself-attachment
As a result, your bickering gives rise to emotions and insults; this is calledaffliction
Finally, you feel aversion toward this person. This is calledprejudice
And then you understand—
There is really no one else in this world, only you.
When you are here, the world exists along with you,
and when you leave, the world disappears along with you.
All those other people, all those entanglements, attachments, and attempts at control,
are just the various entanglements within you, arising between you and yourself.
And so, you understand that saying once again:
Originally, there is not a thing—where could dust alight?
