87 Multi-Ring Set Thinking

Multi-Loop Set Thinking is a thinking model represented through a dimensional diagram. It can help people organize their thoughts, visualize abstract problems, see the connections between them, and derive an ideal solution to a problem. In reality, however, finding an ideal solution is not easy. Sometimes, we also need to give some things up to arrive at a relatively optimal solution.

The three most common demands we see are fast, high quality, and cheap. Draw three circles with them, each pair overlapping — in geometry this represents having two advantages at once: fast and good, good and cheap, cheap and fast. But clever as you are, you surely know that to gain more benefits, you must pay a corresponding price. The price of fast and good is expensive; the price of fast and cheap is poor quality; the price of good and cheap is slow — because finding it takes more time, and by the time you find it, it's sold out, and you have to queue and wait for the next wave, which makes it slow. Even cleverer, you'll notice that poor corresponds to good, expensive corresponds to cheap, and slow corresponds to fast. In other words, whatever you choose, the price you pay is always the opposite of what you want. So when you want this and that, draw a Venn diagram for yourself and see what the price is. A job with high pay and little work can't possibly have no barriers to entry; a job with high pay that's easy to get into will most likely work you to death. A job that's easy to get with little work is surely low-paying. If you want to gain something, you must give something up; if you want more, the price gets higher — that's just how the world works.
