29 MECE Principle

It means mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive: when breaking a major issue down into more specific objects, there should be no overlap or omission.
Five methods can help us avoid this problem and make our expression and thinking clearer and more rigorous.
The process method breaks things down according to how they develop and change. For example, a production process can be broken down into plans for the stages before, during, and after production; project planning and execution can be broken down into stages a b c d; and business operations can be broken down into steps 123. Break the process down until a result is reached or the next cycle begins. This ensures nothing is missed without any overlap.
The dichotomy method mainly uses opposites or corresponding terms that are mutually exclusive, such as day and night or domestic and overseas. But you also need to check whether there are intermediate categories. For example, when dividing the day into morning and afternoon, should noon be included? When dividing people into superiors and subordinates, should peers be included? This ensures nothing is missed without any overlap.
The matrix method applies the dichotomy method twice, crossing the categories to form four quadrants. For example, a common time-management framework classifies tasks as urgent and important, urgent but not important, important but not urgent, or neither urgent nor important. The matrix method is widely used; the Boston matrix and SWOT analysis are classic examples of matrix frameworks.
The element method looks at the components that make up the core subject. For example, an apartment building can be divided into Units 1, 2, and 3, or Floors 1, 2, and 3. A group can be divided by age, occupation, or income. Be careful to classify along one dimension at a time; otherwise, categories may overlap or leave things out.
The formula method breaks things down using established mathematical formulas. Since mathematical formulas are inherently rigorous, you can simply use them to structure the analysis. For example, sales revenue can be broken down into customer traffic and average spend per customer. To explore how to increase profits, you can consider how to raise prices and how to reduce costs. As long as the formula is correct, there will naturally be no overlap or omissions.
The principle was originally designed to help analysts at consulting firms identify all the key factors and possible solutions. It enables analysts to pinpoint the root of a problem more accurately and comprehensively, and plays a crucial role in the Pyramid Principle. Although miss is not a tool for directly solving problems, it is a way of thinking that can help us solve them better. In other words, when we think we have no solution, it helps us discover an angle we have overlooked; and when we think we already have a solution, it helps us find a better one. So, consider that “me seed” is pronounced the same as “me see”: as an objectively existing self, I can see more of the unknowns in the present—a clever idea.
