04 Notes on Chinese Classics / Guiguzi

Part 2, Session 1 · The Strategy of the Weak as the Way the Dao Works

The use of the way of the weak doesn't really mean you should become weak; it means you should pretend to be weak

Key insights

Weakness is the means by which the Dao worksIt doesn't really mean you should become weak; it means you shouldpretend to be weak. Laozi speaks of true weakness that does not contend; Guiguzi speaks of feigned weakness with a purpose. In a contest, only by appearing in the guise of the weak, like prey, can you draw out the other person's true thoughts and ultimately take the initiative.

2.1 Two interpretations of the use of the way of the weak

Laozi's use of the way of the weak (Daoism)

CharacteristicsManifestationResult
True weaknessNeither competing nor fighting for gainsBeing taken advantage of
GivingSelfless givingHaving nothing
Drawing closer to the DaoLetting things take their natural courseSpiritual fulfillment

Guiguzi’s principle of using weakness (the School of Diplomacy)

CharacteristicsManifestationResult
Feigned weaknessFeigning weaknessDrawing out the truth
Having an objectiveAdopting the posture of preyTaking the initiative
Winning the gameInformation advantageWinning the competition

The Core Difference

"Laozi said that the weak are the means of the Dao. We should give; if we give selflessly, we will surely get results. So, what does Guiguzi say? Can you pretend to be relatively weak? Can you deliberately, when you are weak—when you know you are weak—adopt the posture of the weak, like prey, and draw out the other person’s true thoughts?"

2.2 Four levels of pretending to be weak

Level 1: Pretend not to understand

Level 2: Pretend to be weak

Level 3: Pretend to be prey

Level 4: Pretend to fail

2.3 Practical applications of the principle of using weakness

Application scenario matrix

ScenarioWeakness is the means by which the Dao worksSuggested wordingExpected outcome
Managing upwardEmphasize the difficulty"Boss, this is quite a difficult task..."Secure resources and support
Client negotiationsAdopt a consultative stance"You’re an expert in this area. I’d like to ask you..."Draw out the actual needs
Competitive strategyConceal your strength"We're small players—we wouldn't dare compare ourselves to you..."Get your opponent to underestimate you
Interpersonal relationshipsFocus on listening"Go ahead, I'm listening..."Gather information about the other party
Crisis managementRedirect the tension"I may have misunderstood..."Defuse conflict

Managing up: Winning the boss's favor

The underlying logic:

Client relationships: Using your persona

Negotiation skills: Show humility and weakness

2.4 Using Weakness in Mobile Warfare

The Teacher's central idea

"Annihilate the enemy through mobile warfare—that is the Teacher's central idea."

Historical case study: Crossing the Chishui River Four Times

2.5 The Limits of Using Weakness

When not to use it

ScenarioCauseAlternatives

How to avoid becoming truly weak

Key quotes

Practical application

Individual Level

  1. Learn to keep quiet: Listen more and speak less; listen before speaking
  2. Actively show weakness: Reveal some "weaknesses" to get others to lower their guard
  3. Adopt a consultative stance: Ask others for advice to draw out their true thoughts
  4. Conceal your strength: Don't show all your cards at the outset

In the workplace

  1. Managing upward: Emphasize the difficulty of the task to secure resources and support
  2. Getting along with colleagues: Avoid showing off your abilities and making enemies
  3. Negotiation strategy: Let the other side speak first to gain an informational advantage
  4. Crisis management: Show some weakness to redirect the conflict

In business

  1. Business negotiations: Pretend to be a small player so your opponents underestimate you
